MS
Exchange Recovery
Exchange Server is designed to meet the messaging and collaboration
needs for businesses of all sizes, from small organizations
to large distributed enterprises. In today's competitive business
environment, knowledge workers require greater productivity
tools and network performance in order to help their organizations
succeed.
In Exchange Server 5.5, all the user and data configuration
for a given server is stored on that server. In Exchange 2000,
the majority of configuration data is probably stored on a
different server called as Active Directory domain controller.
In MS Exchange Recovery, Disk Doctors India follow the Microsoft
recommended practice of restoring Exchange Server.
In Exchange Server, Disk Doctors India can recover from almost
any disaster to an Exchange Server computer if you have the
following:
- A backup of the registry settings for Exchange Server.
- A backup of the databases on the server.
- The contents of any queue folders for messages in transit.
In most of the cases possibility of recovering the data is
higher if you simply have the backups of three files Pub.edb
(public folder database), Dir.edb (directory database) and
Priv.ebd (mailbox database) files. The registry settings are
generic and queues are empty in Microsoft Exchange server
5.5 and it is often a simple task to re-create additional
configuration information that is not captured in the Dir.edb
file.
The configuration information is stored differently on Microsoft
Exchange server 2000 and Microsoft Exchange server 5.5 but
the process to recover user information is same for both the
servers. The primary difference is that most configuration
information may not even be stored on the same server, but
on Active Directory domain controllers. This change can potentially
simplify or complicate recovery, depending on how you manage
Active Directory.
Because most configuration information is generally safe
on a different server, Disk Doctors India can restore an Exchange
2000 installation with all or most of the configuration settings
intact simply by reinstalling Exchange 2000 and using the
disaster recovery switch with Setup.
In a worst-case scenario, in which the Exchange 2000 server
and Active Directory server have been completely destroyed
by a catastrophic event, the only information that you have
left is the backup tapes. Although such catastrophes are rare,
if you consider such scenarios, it may help you design your
backup and recovery strategies.
Initial requirements in Exchange server
2000 recovery includes:
- Hardware replacement.
- Complete backup of the hard drive and other logical drives
where critical applications or data is installed.
- Exchange server 2000 and Windows Server 2000 installation
disks, including service packs or fixes if any.
- Exchange database backups.
- System state backups.
Disk Doctors India process to recover data
from Microsoft Exchange server 2000:
- First the hardware is reconfigured to that of original
hardware.
- Logical drives are created that closely match the original
configuration.
- Disk Doctors India then reinstall the operating system
of the same version of Windows server 2000 (Microsoft advanced
server 2000, Windows server 2000 or Microsoft windows datacenter
server) as a stand alone-server to the same drives and location
where windows server 2000 was previously installed and used
the same server names as used before.
- Disk Doctors India then restore the complete drive backups
but in rare cases system stable backup is required to be
restored before the restoration of complete drive backup.
If disk image backups have been taken earlier then we can
skip the process of reinstallation of operating system and
other backup restoration.
- Now the system stable backups are restored and by restarting
and restoring the domain controllers then the member servers
have server logon and access to Active Directory. Active
Directory and IIS metabase are restored after restoring
the system stable backup.
- Using the disaster recovery switch Exchange server 2000
is reinstalled. Disaster recovery switch setup reads the
Active Directory and restores the previous settings as much
as possible.
- Disk Doctors India finally restore Exchange server 2000
database including ancillary databases and information store
such as KMS and SRS databases.
